When students are at risk of/or becoming chronically absent, a simple intervention called ‘Planned Student Discussion’ can be helpful.

This is a focused, one on one meeting with the student, free from interruptions. Students often benefit from this type of meeting when they lack meaningful relationships, or when they are seeking attention.

During the meeting teachers should:

  • State concerns about attendance and get clarity from the student

  • Brainstorm actions that you and the student can take to resolve attendance concerns

  • Set up an informal action plan

  • Schedule a follow-up meeting (within two weeks)

Tips for Success:

  • Determine when to meet individually with the student (ensure this is a time free from distractions, maybe during a break, lunch or before/after school)

  • Plan to keep a written record of the discussion

  • Set aside devices and set a timer for at least 10 minutes

  • Make sure the student has your undivided attention and keep the conversation solutions focused

  • Create a specific action plan to support the student based on the brainstorm discussion

  • Set aside a time to follow-up on the plan
