There are times when student health concerns impact attendance. Students should be referred to a school nurse in the following instances:

  1. Frequent absences due to illness: If a student is frequently absent due to illness, it may be a sign that they have an underlying health condition that needs to be addressed by a medical professional. The school nurse can assess the student's health and make recommendations for further medical evaluation if necessary.

  2. Chronic health conditions: Students with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or epilepsy may require medication or other medical interventions during the school day. The school nurse can work with the student's healthcare provider to develop a plan for managing the condition at school and provide support as needed.

  3. Mental health concerns: Students who are experiencing mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, or suicidal ideation may require immediate support and intervention. The school nurse can provide initial assessment and support and refer the student to a mental health professional for further evaluation and treatment.
